Originally designed by Lynton Lamb in 1955 as a set of high-value stamps, the Castle Definitives featured the Wilding portrait of Queen Elizabeth II framed next to her royal castles at Caernarfon in Wales, Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland, Edinburgh in Scotland and Windsor in England. To celebrate their 50th anniversary, Royal Mail has re-produced them as a special miniature sheet.

These four stamps are based on the original high-value issues of the 1950s and early sixties, representing the 2/6d Blackish Brown, the 5/-Red, the 10/- Blue and the £1 Black respectively.

The mini-sheet is printed using a combined process of intaglio and litho and the effect is quite stunning, creating a very desirable collector's item. The border includes the four national floral emblems relevant for the castles, daffodil, shamrock, thistle and rose.
