2. Machins 2006-2008

This section is to enable identification of Machins and the varieties issued during 2006/08.

2008 Definitive Releases Announced by Royal Mail

April 1st 2008 - Machins are issued to correspond with the rise in postal rates.

The 56p lime green will be for the new worldwide airmail rate for letters up to 10 grams and the 81p sea green will pay the worldwide airmail rate for 20 gram letters. A new 15p shocking pink will make up the difference between second-class letters (27p) and second-class large letters (42p). The difference between the two first-class rates, 36p and 52p, will be covered by the 16p pink Machin issued last year. The 9p Machin will be returned to general sale as a make-up stamp for the difference between first-class (36p) and second-class (27p) letters.

Although not immediately apparent there are a couple of distinct differences between the 9p issued on April 1st and that issued in 2005. Firstly in the margins, the Printer Logo has been removed from the newer issue (evident in a cylinder block - the cylinder number is unchanged at D1). Also the new issue contains a "colour printing" (see image). The changes on the single stamp are less pronounced. The value on the 9p is set lower in the frame and there is a visible shade difference.

Two definitive booklets have already been announced for 2008. One is the third in the "Love" Series. As you can see this is a complete format change with 4 x 1st Gold on the right hand panel and 2 x Love stamps on the left hand panel. This is the first time that this mix has included two Love stamps. It also has two labels next to the Love stamps. Cylinder versions are unlikely to be available.
Release date is 15th January 2008.

The second definitive book announced for release in 2008 is another set of 6 Smilers. The format for these is the same as the previous releases of this issue. i.e. 6 different smiler stamps attached to the right hand pane. Cylinder booklets will not be available.
Release date is 28th February 2008.

Before both of the above issues, Royal Mail has announced that the first Prestige Book of the year will "honour" James Bond.

There will be one definitive pane that will consist of 8 Gold 1st Machins surrounding a central label. Obviously no cylinder panes will exist as they will have been trimmed before making up the booklet.
Release date is 10th January 2008.

June 5th 2007 - Colour Change for the £1.

A further GB Sheet Machin (with cylinder D1) was released on the 5th June 2007 - a colour change to Magenta for the £1 stamp.
On the same day a new Prestige Book "The Machin" (DX39) was released and this included a copy of the new Magenta £1 printed vertically se-tenant with the old Bluish-Violet version.

The box below shows the new £1 and also the other issues from a multi-pane page from the Machin Prestige Book all printed by DLR with the exception of the last stamp (1p) which is produced by Enschedé for the "Army in Uniform" Prestige Book (DX40) issued the same year. This same pane also produced Enschedé versions of the 46p and 54p stamps.
All stamps produced in 2007 are unique to that year.

March 27th 2007 - New Issues = Price Increase.

A new set of five GB Machins was released on the 27th March 2007 to match the price increase.
The basic inland rates will rise, 1st from 32p to 34p & 2nd class from 23p to 24p. International Rates will also rise.
The basic rates for Large Letters increase from 44p to 48p (1st class) and from 37p to 40p (2nd class).
International rates also rise as follows :- Europe rate (10g) from 44p to 48p - World rate (10g) from 50p to 54p - World rate (20g) from 72p to 78p
World rate (40g) from £1.12 to £1.17 zone 1 & £1.19 to £1.24 zone 2. Surface mail rises from 42p to 46p.

This issue includes the new denominations of 16p, 48p, 54p and 78p all printed by De La Rue in Gravure.

In addition eight new Country definitives will be released with values of 48p and 78p being released for each region.

One of the things collectors should bear in mind is that many of the stamps issued less than a year ago will start to be phased out and supplies of some will be increasingly difficult to find - so if you haven't yet purchased last year's new issues (see below) now is the time to do so.

August 15th 2006 - PIP (Pricing in Proportion) has arrived.

The whole of the top row and the first two at the left of the bottom row are from Sheets printed by De La Rue and released on the 1st August. The other two (bottom row right)are from Booklets printed by Walsall released on the 15th August.
The idea of the 12p and 14p stamps are as "make weights". For example use a small 2nd class stamp, add a 14p stamp and you now have First Class Large value postage. Not sure I would want to try it mind!
